HERE’S A FAIR question: What happens when the journalistic duty to cover new State Fair green initiatives gets tested by the sight of teens with crosscut saws, and then the smell of deep-fried Reese’s Cups?

At Friday’s opening day of the State Fair of Virginia at the Meadow in Doswell, the answer was simple– I checked out all three.

I started with the Forestry Field Day hosted by the FFA in the Heritage Village of the State Fair, which runs through next Sunday.

It was there I found Bobby Orrock, a state delegate and an agriculture teacher and adviser at Spotsylvania High School.

The farm-raised Orrock had brought 112 of his students from Spotsylvania, with several taking part in competitions that ranged from log tossing and rolling to log sawing with bow and crosscut saws…
