The following nine House bills that I introduced have been signed into law by the governor:

HB 1625: addresses appropriate care of animals with regard to exposure to extreme weather;

HB 1626: further defines the state ban on animal fighting with a presumption against tethered fowl;

HB 1627: directs the Commissioner of the Department of Social Services to prioritize resources for inspecting child welfare agencies along four criteria;

In Brief: 2017 Laws going into effect July 1

Tomorrow, the new laws passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor this session will go into effect. A summary of all of them is available here:

Crossover Legislative Update

We are halfway through the 2017 Session of the General Assembly. This has been a busy and productive session and I’m happy to report back on several key issues.

Out of the fifteen bills that I introduced, fourteen have passed the House of Delegates and are now being reviewed by the Senate.

Orrock February Legislative Update

On Sunday, February 5th, the committees responsible for the budget bills unveiled their complete proposals. Two important deadlines happened this week. Tuesday was Crossover, the deadline with which each chamber must complete work on bills that originated in their chamber. Thursday the House voted on their version of the budget.

Last Tuesday, Delegate Chris Jones, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, held a press conference with Senate budget leaders to highlight their joint priorities in regards to a compensation package.

Advisory Committee Update

I would like to take the time to briefly summarize the issues at Veto Session.

Governor McAuliffe vetoed 19 House bills and 5 Senate bills.  Of the House bills, all measures dealing with guns failed to be overridden with all Democrats voting to support the Governor.  Two bills were over ridden by the House, one that would preserve our existing historical markers and one that would assist our coal regions, however the veto was sustained in Senate.  All Senate bills that were vetoed were …
